Why should every entrepreneur study and learn a foreign language?
The answers are many but one of the most significant is the simple understanding of the world around us. My personal favorite quote comes from the Austrian philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein, who once said, “The limits of my language mean the limits of my world.” In other words, if the view of the world lies within the language you speak, and the culture that comes with it, then you are limiting yourself to that world and, for entrepreneurs, the market within it.
By learning a different language you open up your world to new ideas and new perspectives. Every culture and its language has its own unique way. Learning it gives you added insight on the best way to conduct your business and approach your clients.
Develop your skills
Learning a second language helps develop key skills that can contribute to the success of your business, such as a systematic work ethic, communication and listening skills, and analytical thinking. It takes you out of your comfort zone, teaches you where your limits are. It can help you overcome any fears or self-doubt holding you back. Above all, you will radiate confidence. All these are crucial in developing your own business. As an entrepreneur, it will add to your professionalism and help attract new clients.
Practical side
From a practical point of view, knowing a different language, especially English, allows you to enter the international waters of business more easily. English has become the de facto lingua franca for much of the business world—it is the bridge language that brings business and trade together. In learning English, your market will no longer be limited to your home country. A larger market equals greater opportunities for more clientele and with it, an increase in profits for your business.
If you wish to expand your business, do not limit yourself to only the world you know. Learn or improve your English and let it become a magnet for your continued success. Contact me and join the number of successful entrepreneurs who went through my English mentoring and coaching program.
